TIM's 10 gig fiber is finally here!!!

logo-tim4

TIM is the first company in Italy and among the first companies in Europe to bring fiber FTTH connections of up to 10 Gigabits per second in download and up to 2 Gigabits per second in upload to users' homes thanks to XGS-PON technology. Thanks to such performance all the issues present during daily use will finally be overcome, it will be possible to enjoy an optimal experience for both streaming high quality content (including Ultra HD) and online gaming and smart working without interruptions, lag or slowdowns. Going into more detail, the acronym GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and indicates the fact that the fiber distribution network is passive and consists of elements (cables, splices, splitters, etc.) that do not need to be powered by electricity to function. Instead, electricity is needed by devices installed at the ends of the network-that is, in power plants and end-user homes-where light is converted into electrical signals and vice versa to enable the connection to be used. While in classic GPON-based networks this architecture allows for connections of up to 2.5 Gigabits, in TIM networks based on XGS-PON (which stands for 10 Gigabit capable Symmetric Passive Optical Network) a new splitter technology is used that allows up to 32 customers to be connected to each fiber (technically we go from a maximum splitting factor of 1:128 to one of 1:256) with a maximum connection of 10 Gbps symmetrical download. In addition, the reach increases from 60 to 100 km. Quite a leap, indeed!!!
